The evacuation map illustrated here is from Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, DC. This is a project that 3:5-6 Maps completed in the summer of 2018 and serves as a good example of a typical emergency evacuation map for a church facility.
Evacuation maps provide staff, congregants and visitors with egress directions in the event of a facility emergency. Knowing the plan before the emergency arises aids greatly in surviving the emergency.
Safety and security maps can be made available to local police and fire departments to assist them during an emergency. Most police officers and fire personnel have little to no familiarity with the layout of a church structure. Providing these departments with a campus map, such as the one above, helps them in planning their course of action.
Evacuation maps are a vital aspect of any Life Safety Plan that may be developed by your church. A well designed Life Safety Plan can be a great asset to security teams, operations groups and others within the church family. The visible existence of evacuation maps throughout a church campus can convey to staff and church members as well as visitors that the church has taken steps to address safety issues and has a well-developed plan in place.
Insurance carriers encourage churches to post evacuation maps and frequently will offer reduced premiums when churches do so.
